What is Maloff Protect 250mg/100mg tablets for?

Maloff Protect belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials. It contains two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride.

Maloff Protect is used to prevent malaria. It is available from the pharmacy for adults. It is not suitable for use in children or adolescents unless it has been prescribed for them by a doctor. If you are under 18 and you are visiting an area where there is malaria, talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist for advice. Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, which passes the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) into the bloodstream. Maloff Protect prevents malaria by killing this parasite.

 

How should you take Maloff Protect 250mg/100mg tablets?

Adults:

Take one tablet once a day at the same time each day with food or milky drink where possible.

Start taking Maloff Protect 1 to 2 days before travel.

Continue taking Maloff Protect every day during your stay and for another 7 days after you return.

If you are sick (vomit) within one hour of taking your Maloff Protect tablet, take another dose straight away.

Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Not suitable for use in children and adolescents aged under 18 years unless prescribed by a doctor.

IMPORTANT: You must get advice from a healthcare professional about which antimalarial medicine or medicines to take. You must ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if Maloff Protect is suitable for the part of the world that you are visiting. Getting advice for malaria is only one of the aspects to protect your health before your travel. Remember to seek a full travel consultation. If your travel plans change, you must seek updated travel advice.

  • Keep out of reach and sight of children
  • Can cause side effects. The most common side effects are headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. If you experience any of the above, speak to one of our in-store pharmacists or your GP
  • Please be aware that sever reactions are rare. However, if you experience any of the following stop taking Maloff protect

Immediately and consult your doctor:

  1. Skin rashes
  2. Itching Sudden wheezing
  3. Difficulty breathing
  4. Swelling of the face
  5. Tightening of the chest/throat

If any of the below apply to you, Maloff protect is not suitable and you should speak to a medical professional about other forms of malaria prevention:

  1. Children and adolescents under 18
  2. Adults weighing less than 40 kg (6st 4lbs)
  3. People allergic to any of the ingredients
  4. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant
  5. Patients diagnosed with renal or hepatic impairment
  6. Patients with a history of depression or seizures
  7. Patients with tuberculosis
  8. Patients taking any of the following medications: etoposide, rifampicin or rifabutin, metoclopramide, warfarin or other oral anticoagulant, indinavir, efavirenz, zidovudine or boosted protease inhibitor
