Safe sex matters

This blog discusses how to have safe sex. We often shy away from discussing the ‘s’ word but it really does matter!  Everyday we consider the risk associated with our day. We ponder if we will be stuck in traffic, caught in the rain or face a possible train delay. However, we spend little time thinking about the consequences after the undressing.

Here are a few risks associated with that fun activity which you should be at least consider and prepare.

Sexually transmitted disease (STIs)

STIs are illnesses caused by microorganisms transmitted between people during sex.  Anyone exposed to it can be affected, it has little respect for a persons standing (poor, rich, educated or uneducated). Syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are the most common bacterial infections. Trichomoniasis, a protozoan infection, is also diagnosed frequently in women (men who are affected almost never have symptoms).

A number of viruses can also be sexually transmitted, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), human papilloma virus (HPV), HIV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

Can I share a little secret? Well actually, it’s no secret STIs are on the rise! So stay safe.

Unwanted pregnancy

Before and after having sex ask yourself? Am I ready to become a parent? It’s important to consider this prior to having sex as an unwanted pregnancy can lead to a period of stress- there are numerous steps now available which help to minimise the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. Some of these include contraception, condoms and emergency hormonal contraception’s. Most of these are have been made easier to access as time has gone on.
